All the pre-competition doubts were laid to rest as Usain Bolt became the third (or second if you are Carl Lewis) man in history to retain his Olympic 100m title.
He won in an Olympic record time of 9.63, ahead of his younger training partner and fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay finished fourth in front of a packed house at Stratford and a television audience of millions.
Bolt didn't start well but as he said in his post race interview it's not the start that matters but the finish and after about fifty metres he began to surge away from Blake to run the second-fastest time in history.
Bolt is probably the most popular non-Brit taking part in the games and he has the chance to repeat his Beijing sprint double later on this week although the longer distance is probably better suited to Yohan Blake, and then of course there's the small matter of the sprint relay where it is hard to see beyond another Jamaican gold medal.
