Great going forward

Banks: Charles, MacKay, Moore: Robson, Charlton: Best, Keegan, Law, Greaves and Barnes. A 3-2-5 formation without the need for full backs would be great going forward but might struggle in their defensive duties, the old football story used to say that Greaves and Law only left the opposition penalty box to come off for half-time so Barnes and Best would have to be a bit more diligent than some players I can think of when it comes to tracking back.

These are the stamps that are featured in the  collection issued by The Royal Mail as its contribution to the 150th anniversary of the establishing of the rules of Association Football with a stamp issue celebrating 11 of the greatest football heroes from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Of course there are debates raging, no Duncan Edwards, no King Kenny, the obligatory coloured face and my own worry - the lack of a decent full back (Danny McGrain, Phil Neal, Kenny Sansom, Ashley Cole?).

The only criteria for selection were a) you had to be good enough (so that excused Carlton Palmer, Geoff Thomas, every Welsh player that has ever lived apart from John Charles and Ryan Giggs and anyone from Northern Ireland who wasn't called George Best) and b) you had to have been retired for at least 15 years (hence no over hyped saviour of White Hart Lane Gareth Bale).

Like all 'best ofs' it's part celebration, part commemoration and part talking point.

LO re NI and Wales...but you're right! I agree re the black face...top eleven eh? John Barnes probably wouldn't be in my top 100.
