Sunday 13 July 2003 wasn't a particularly eventful day in world history but it was the day I made my first blog posting. I had set-up my blog following an article in the Independent about this new phenomenon that was about to sweep the nation. Having missed out on previous sweeping phenomenon such as "roller blading," "deely boppers," and "slush puppies," I wanted to be in on this so I signed up with one of the suggested blogger hosts, registered with the Brit Bloggers sites and sat back with writers block.
I didn't really do much with the blog after that for almost three years, a combination of me having a heart attack, my brother being diagnosed and then dying with/from lung cancer and a lack of having something to say are the reasons for my indolence. Six was the first person from the 'outside world' to post a comment, that was in May 2006 and I think my interest in my blog was rekindled by a post on one of the 5Live boards. I never wanted my blog to be just about me and what I was doing on daily basis, that after all is what Twitter has been invented for, I wanted it to be about things I'm interested in, football, sport, music, cinema, television etc plus the items of local, national and international news that appealed to me.
I can't restrict myself to one subject, that's down to a wandering as much as an inquisitive mind. I've danced around the handbag of politics rather than putting my hand inside it and having a good rummage because other people do it so much better than me (Span for a kick-off) but I do have a sense of natural justice as well as a sense of natural outrage and so I dip in from time to time.
The one thing I have learned over the past six years is that not everything I write has to be profound, not everything carries the same weight intellectually, not everything has much importance beyond my keyboard and screen. I began mainly because I had given up writing and felt the need to return to it for some sort of outlet of my thoughts and writing a diary didn't appeal. I know from the stats that people do visit and don't leave messages (and those people aren't always Span moving from one side of the world to the other) and that's cool. I've also realised that blog-land is a bit like buying a round of drinks in a pub, just as it's not always possible for everybody to buy a round so it's not always possible for fellow bloggers to reciprocate and post on this blog. That wasn't the reason I started and it's not the reason I've continued.
The blog can be a confessional as well, if you follow the next blog links you come across some weird and wonderful sites out there with people who are more desperate than me in craving attention. I've met some interesting people through this page, people who have passed through and posted for a short while, others who post once in a while and those who continue to post. All have been welcome and will always be welcome as long as this blog continues to inspire me to write.
So why this post? Well it's my 1000th on this blog and I thought it was time for a confessional!

1000 posts, eh? That's quite an achievement, even more so when you realise that by far the majority of your posts are at least as good as many newspaper articles.
Long may it continue! Keep 'em coming, Paul!
I agree with Shy and please DO NOT try to butter me up as your writing IMHO is far better than my efforts and I am conscious of getting over-politicy which can be boring...I used to right about orgasms and olives for God's sake! Mind you I do bet I've added quite a few flags to your stats but it is good to see the map of where they all come from. 1000...blimey, that's good. I started with the R5L rush (David COTW) Lena (Kate) Gavin et al...in sept 2005 so you were well ahead of the game! I rember you laughing (in words) about all the different widgets and tags etc that would appear on my blog, almost continuously! Cleaned it up a bit now. It was PPG that made me visit your blog (well, not "made me" but she said she enjoyed reading your blog so I popped in...
missed the closing of the MB (on a plane)...never mind
Thanks Guys for the comments.
Span, I wasn't trying to butter you up I was being honest. Political posts aren't boring but they need more consideration before replying - look at the lag between your posts and some of my replies, I like to ruminate.
bull!
;-)
Congrats on your 1000 post.
