2006 FA Cup Final at Cardiff - Liverpool 3 West Ham United 3 - Liverpool win on pens.
Well it's the morning after the afternoon before and evertime I close my eyes I see Stevie Gerrard's 35 yard strike going in denying us our first trophy in twenty-six years. Listening to the phone-ins last night two things were obvious, firstly the better team lost and secondly Dean Ashton should be in the World Cup Squad and not Peter Crouch.
Alan Pardew got his tactics spot on and we played a big part in one of the best FA Cup Finals of all time, certainly the best in my life time.
Everybody was outstanding from Anton and the back, through Nigel Reo-Coker in midfield, who along with Yossi Benayoun I made the man of the match, up to Dean Ashton up front - we were superb.
When we went 2-0 I felt it was ours to lose not Liverpool's to win, even when we went 3-2 and it was the last minute of normal time you knew we couldn't write them off. After all as everybody knows they came from 3-0 down to win the Champions League last year against AC Milan. As I said to Jan last night at least we are in good company!
It was a shame one team had to lose and perhaps as somebody has said on one of the message boards this morning we didin't lose the match, we lost the penalty shoot out.
Janis couldn't watch the shoot-out and when I told her we had lost she asked "Who missed?" - she couldn't believe it when I replied "Konchesky, Zamora and Ferdinand."
If we had been outplayed and outclassed I think defeat may have been easier to take but losing like that is hard to take.
What we can take from this season is that we finished 9th in the Premiership, reached an FA Cup Final and qualified for the UEFA Cup for next season.
We beat Arsenal away, drew with Tottenham away and beat them at home and gave it our best against Manchester United home and away. Chelsea are a different story and they outplayed us home and away - even at the Bridge when they gave us a goal start and had a player sent off.
Everybody has played their part from Shaka at the back through to Marlon up front - bring on the UEFA Cup and the 2006-07 Premiserhsip season.
Now what the club has to do is build on that, we need four, maybe five quality players to improve things - a new right back ) my preference would be Luke Young, a right hand side midfield player, cover for Matty on the left and another central midfield player.
So many so-called experts wrote us off before the season started and I am glad we proved them all wrong.
