Man, I'm getting old.

I've always prided myself on keeping up to date with music. I think listening to John Peel during my teenage years helped me acquire some sort of audio wanderlust, never afraid to try something new and having albums by a diverse group of artists.

However, having checked out the chart on mp3.com http://www.mp3.com/rock-pop/genre/13/top/artist.html which lists the most popular artists of the moment, based on mp3 downloads the previous day, I have come to the conclusion that it's time to saddle up and head off into the sunset. The Top Ten is a who's who of artists I would cross the street, or change frequency to avoid hearing. Ladies and Germs I give you:

1. Pussycat Dolls
2. Crazy Frog
3. Nelly Furtado
4. Red Hot Chilli Peppers
5. Christina Aguilera
6. Taylor Hicks
7. Paris Hilton
8. Green Day
9. Panic! At the Disco
10.AC/DC

It made me think of the Carter USM lyric "it's like punk never happened."

Okay I agree that the Chilli's have made a couple of good albums but the latest one is just simply regurgitated generic west coast pap, John Frusciante is rapidly becoming the Tony Adams and Paul Merson of rock - "look at me man, I beat drugs and can play tunes." He's your worst nightmare, a hippy who took drugs and lived to tell everyone.

Green Day wanted to be The Clash but seemed to have settled for being the Rezillos, I don't know what's worse Green Day for giving up on their ideals or Blink 182 and Alien Ant Farm trying to be Green Day.

I don't have a problem with AC/DC - there's always a place in music for the head down, no nonsense, mindless boogie style they have perfected.

There was some new on the Mp3 site, number two Shoegaze album of all time, the wonderful, the joyous, the fingers drumming furiously on the steering wheel -

Released on 15th October 1990 it includes the
brilliant Vapour Trail.

What was the name of the excellent indie showcase programme in the late eighties/early nineties. It was short lived, but played some of the most left field stuff ever put on TV.
