You Learn Something New Everyday
Those amongst us of a certain age (i.e over 40) will remember a time when at the end of the main feature at the cinema you stood for the National Anthem. Well anybody watching or listening to the plethora (great word) of programmes on the World Cup this week would have also learned that you had to stand for the National Anthem at the end of International Football matches, up to, and including, the 1966 World Cup. Apparently Alan Ball, Terry Paine, Jimmy Greaves and John Connelly were all booed because they left the field after the opening game against Uruguay without waiting for the tape to begin. Reading Alan Ball's autobiography he seems to be under the impression that the crowd were unhappy because England played so badly in the 0-0 draw.
