Avon Causeway bridge closed this morning and will re-open in 18 weeks. Oh the irony, the bridge is about three miles from the site of the first Bailey Bridge and is being demolished to make way for a new six lane superhighway, no I lied about that, it's being replaced by a new bridge. The old one has finally had enough and is deemed as unsafe for the volume of cars that use it as a short cut between villages on the east side of the mighty River Avon and Hurn Airport. The new bridge won't actually improve traffic flow much, although it will be a two lane bridge, the current one is single track, Dorset County Council are putting in traffic calming measures on either side so that traffic can only travel in one direction at one time.
Actually there is a serious point, the bridge is worn out through over usage by lorries that are simply to big for its 7.5 tonne loading. I use the bridge on the way home sometimes, not as a short cut - it actually adds time and distance to my way home, as it makes a change from hurtling down the A338. The road over the bridge is officially the C137 - when did you last see that designation on a road sign outside of France? I once got forced off the road by an HGV here one Christmas, the sight of the Avon in full flood getting closer to me by the second was one of my stranger driving experiences.
So there you have it, adding to the eclectic mix of this weeks posts: Bergkamp, Karate, Wonder Woman, a road Bridge.
