Here We Go.........Country Overboard

No wonder our European cousins think we're crazy, have you seen the newspapers recation to the win over Greece? You would have thought Old Trafford had witnessed the second coming, not the defeating of the most mediocre European Champions ever. Okay the first half was good but we haven't gone from zero to hero on the basis of a friendly surely? Are Steve and Tel the new Lennon and McCartney of English football or will they, to use the music analogy, be the new Geldof and Fingers?

We've been given a bye to the 2008 European Championships, don't fool yourselves otherwise, Israel were made to look good by inept Irish, French and Swiss sides in the World Cup qualifying games and Russia don't, as Terry in The Likely Lads would say, travel well.

What England need to do to convince me that we are moving forward is rack up the goals and play well. I was glad for Rio because I think people were beginning to wonder whether he could cut it at this level and, without sounding like a hypocrite, he needed a game where he could bring the ball out from the back and show he could play. Peter Crouch is still not International quality and despite all the bluster from Stamford Bridge I don't think John Terry is either - he's made to look good at Chelsea because he has Claude Makemyday in front of him.

Still, a win is a win - I suppose.

OOO someone else who has a question mark over Terry. You're absolutely right, Terry has looked superb since Hargreaves was (at long last)plonked in front of him. In the WC prior to that move he looked woeful. How he made it into the FIFA WC squad is beyond me, I have a suspicion it was based on the overhead clearance off the line he made, but frankly anyone can get lucky and make one of those clearances, it's when you're not forced in to that position that you're really world class.

Hi Six,

Hope you had a good holiday - I'll check out your blog later for details :-)

I just don't buy into the whole 'Terry is the new Bobby Moore' mantra.
