Songs and the myths that follow them
We, that is, those of us with an interest in popular music 1960-present, are aware of certain urban myths that follow some songs around like the smell of urine follows a tramp.
You know who the usual suspects are: Dream by Phil Everly is about masturbation, Brown Sugar by the Stones is about oral sex, Golden Brown and Bridge over Troubled Water are about heroin addiction, Hotel California is about an LSD trip, Ole Ola by the 1978 Scotland World Cup Squad is about a football teams futile attempts to win an international competition - oh sorry, that one wasn't meant to be a myth.
Well to that list you can add Mac and Katie Kissoon's "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" as recorded by Middle of The Road - you know the one that goes, "Where's you're Mama gone," etc.
There's a story going round that it was written about the kidnapping of political dissidents in South America. It makes more sense than the others I've mentioned, we are all familiar with the stories of the disappeared in Chile and Argentina, of the grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo.
Where´s your momma gone
(Where´s your momma gone)
Little baby gone
(Little baby gone)
Where´s your momma gone
(Where´s your momma gone)
Far far away
Where´s your poppa gone
(Where´s your poppa gone)
Little baby gone
(Little baby gone)
Where´s your poppa gone
(Where´s your poppa gone)
Far far away, far far away
Is it possible the myth could be true?

I remember that song from the playground at primary school!
Also there was a good film about the mothers etc (Plaza de Mayo) and in fact they still march/meet/protest. Antonio Banderas, about 2 years ago, don't know if it showed in the UK though.
I found a site a few years ago where the tapes from the pilots who attacked the presidential palace in Santiago had been made available. I've no idea what site it was now though!
They were made public because Kissinger finally admitted (sort of) that the USA had been party to Allende's death and the Pinochet regime that followed.
