Okay, it might seem a little strange, a bald man with a picture of a jar of Brylcreem on his blog but what the heck.

Growing up in the Sixties, Brylcreem was as ubiquitous as Liqourice Spangles, Fanny Craddock, white dog shit and John Noakes. If you visited our house and went into the bathroom there was the famous red jar on the window sill or in the cabinet, it was the same in my friends houses and my relatives houses - Brylcreem was a sight of the Sixties as much as Brian Matthew was a sound of the Sixties.

Now it's making a comeback, probably the greatest thing to come out of Birmingham until the M6 was built it now offers, apparently, the ability to strengthen and improve hair in addition to styling this being due to the fact that is protein enriched and doesn't dry out hair like most gels on the market.

Brylcreem was created in 1929 by County Chemicals who still exist today in Shirley today. It's essentially an emulsion of water and mineral oil stabilised with beeswax and is sold in a tube in the US, and a pot in Europe. It is marketed in the US by Combe Incorporated; in Europe, by the Sara Lee Corporation - I thought she made frozen cakes myself.

Brylcreem's use declined during the 1960s as men's hair fashions changed to favor the "dry look" over the "wet look". However, it has seen a comeback since the late 1990s. Instructions on the use of the product state that "a little dab will do ya." What constitutes "a little dab" is subject to interpretation and desired effect. Hair length and bulk will also play into how much product to use.

For some of us it is of course irrelevant and we'll continue to use hair products as marketed by Mr.Sheen.
