Bald Men and Beards Why?

I was sitting in the car in Sainsbury's car park this afternoon, apparently I was supposed to give Janis and Nathalie who were shopping in Sainsbury's a call when I got outside but I forgot* and we sat at opposite ends of the car park for 45 minutes, still at least I was in the warm car and had Sigur Ros for company, and I noticed a large number of bald men with beards and/or ponytails - why?

Not why did I notice, but why do some bald men feel the need to show the world they can still grow hair but on the bottom and back of their heads instead of the top?

I'm bald but I've never felt the urge to grow a Manu Petit style ponytail, and the beard thing just makes you look as if your head is on upside down.

*P.S Arriving somewhere and forgetting why, is this the first sign of old age?
