Humility Still Has A Part In Sport

Listening to Fernando Alonso on Sunday after winning his second successive F1 Drivers Championship made you realise that there is still some humility and grasp of reality in sport, in an era where we have become used to hystrionics from, in the main, over paid and under-talented individuals.

Alonso will take the Number One with him to McLaren where he will race for three years and he said that his situation reminded him of the late great Ayrton Senna who won three titles without ever racing for Ferrari, Alonso said that if he won three titles that would be enough for him and he would retire without trying to break Senna's record.

It reminded me of Mark Taylor, the former Australian cricket captain, who whilst playing in Pakistan in 1999 declared the innings when his scored was on 334 and equal with the record set by Sir Donald Bradman. Taylor, like Alonso, knew his position in the greater scheme of things.

The cynic in me says I bet he deosn't retire if he wins a third. There's too much cash in it.

I agree Six, I think having said he wants a third there will be too much of a temptation if he doesn't get it in 3 years.

There was quite some partying going on in Barcelona on Sunday night. Very good fun and then the footie team had to lose to Real. Oh well!
