Can We At Least Enjoy The Holiday First?

Back in the eighties, as some of you are aware from a posting on Sarnia's blog, I used to write television reviews for TVS teletext service. One Christmas instead of reviewing a programme I reviewed an evenings adverts on Channel 4 and I was so disappointed that every other advert on Christmas Eve was for a sale. I used football as an analogy saying it was like watching the FA Cup being presented before the match had actually been played.

This year watching Satellite television on Christmas Eve was exactly like being back in the eighties: B&Q, MFI, DFS, PC World, Debenhams - all advertised their sales starting on Boxing Day. Now I know that for a lot of people Christmas isn't about religion it is about giving presents to friends and families, but wouldn't it be good (and I know I'm being naive) if the shops shut for two days - it's a public holiday so there really isn't any need for the shops to be open, after all Christmas isn't exactly a surprise is it?

Today we went to the annual Boxing Day Dip about ten minutes walk from our house. This is the sort of thing holidays are for, not stressing yourself out going round the shops. No wonder people go back to work and feel as if they haven't had a break!

I agree with you Paul, think of all the shop assistants who have to go in early.
I suppose the shops excuse is some people go back to work on Dec 27th.
I can remember when sales didn't start til Jan 1st.

Hi Shy and Curmy,

I hope you both had a good Christmas and Boxing Day. I agree with both of you, holiday time should be spent with family and friends chilling out - not dragging the kids round the superstore.
