Okay, now we know what that sign means don't we? That's right, when you approach a section of road that momentarily narrows you have the right of way.
So why is it that when I travel home at night across Avon Causeway Bridge people are putting their hands up in acknowledgement of the fact that traffic coming the other way to the priority sign are actually stopping! Are they grateful they haven't been run off the road into the ditch?
It's British politeness gone mad, thanking somebody for acknowledging your right of way! It's like when you are in the Supermarket queue and accidentally hit somebody with your trolley and they apologise!
Now I'm all for manners, I hold doors open for ladies etc but this is daft.

Well, I can see your point, Paul. After all, we don't wave, or anything, to people who stop at a red light to let us go through on green, do we?
Still, courtesy is something that our society needs more of (IMHO) : even if it is a bit misplaced sometimes.
I agree Shy about courtesy - I'll never forget one of my old primary schoolteachers who used to say "manners maketh man," I was only 7 at the time but that phrase as stuck with me.
