There's Always One Isn't There

Billie Piper came back from holiday today, I can't say Christmas Holiday because she is a JW and goes away skiing rather than joining in the festive season. The funny thing is that she still accepts her Christmas goody bag from the boss and her Christmas bonus and that's where the problems begin.

Around 10-10:30 this morning I could sense an atmosphere, you usually know when something has gone wrong because the noise in the office next to mine dies down and if you happen to meet somebody in another part of the building they have a certain look on their face. Anyway I was about to send a fax when I noticed that both Magoo and Squirrel had the sort of looks that could kill at twenty paces and being the sort of person who likes to find out why I asked.

Oh boy, do I sometimes wish I could turn the other cheek. Apparently Billie had been boasting about how wonderful her bonus was and how she was going on holiday in March and wasn't it great that she was working a full day (only 1 day a week mind).

Well unfortunately she picked two people to tell: firstly Magoo didn't get an increased bonus this year because the boss felt that as she had more than five weeks off sick she wasn't entitled to an increase. I can't say I blame him, the bonus is discretionary and she really does have an attitude problem. The reason Squirrel didn't get one is known to everybody who has been following her story on this blog.

Now just to give you an idea of the problems I have with Magoo let me tell you a story. On New Years Day her Grandmother died, not very nice and she phoned last week (she was on holiday all last week) to ask if she could take the day off for the funeral (tomorrow 10th) plus Thursday and Friday as holiday. As we are winding down after the tax return rush I said okay. Yesterday I inform her that she is booked out on audit on Monday 26 February and she replies by saying, "I'm not sure, it's my Mum's birthday on the 24th and we are going shopping."

Now, hold on here. Five weeks sick, three days for a funeral and a day off for shopping when her Mum's birthday is on a Saturday? I don't think so - she's forgotten that holiday is pro-rata for non-managers so therefore she would have had January and February's entitlement by the end of the week!

Sometimes you think work would be so much better if it weren't for the clients....or the staff

You're so right Curmy. The funny thing is that the one who is the least bother is the one who will go the furthest because she studies hard and listens - there's no hidden agenda with her she wants to earn a good living being an accountant, whether that's in practice or commerce.

Gosh I can't believe I didn't coment when I visited earlier.

My ramblings about employability (and my lack of it) must be elsewhere on here...

Funny thing is Gavin I received an e-mail notification of your post about being only able to stick a job for 3 years but the post itself has vanished!
