Hardly The Way To Spread The Word Is It?
Is their a group of nations so committed to the enjoyment of cricket than those that make up the West Indies? I don't think so, what a pity it is then that the grounds for the ICC World Cup have been only a quarter full for the tournament that still has a month to go.
There are plenty of sites and blogs offering their opinions and mine like most of them comes down to one solution - subsidise the ticket prices for the locals. Where is the morality in asking people to pay the equivalent of one weeks wages for one days cricket, it's obscene. The amount that the ICC is collecting from television money should have gone directly to the countries hosting the matches to underpin their finances.
This is the biggest chance the West Indies have ever had to show the world their love for cricket but this isn't some Mills and Boon scenario, people need food on the table first and foremost, nobody is going to starve their family in the hope they might see Freddy Flintoff sober and scoring runs against Ireland tomorrow.
It's not going to get any better in the short term either, the groups had been arranged so that Pakistan would play India in the Super Eights, that fixture is replaced by Ireland v Bangladesh. The Pakistan fans have gone home and the Indians didn't really arrive in the first place
It's not too late to do something about it, but sports administrators being the sought of people they are they'll say there isn't anything or it's out of their hands. I also wonder how the executives at LG the main sponsor feel, they were associated with last summers football World Cup in Germany which was an overwhelming success in commercial terms, they probably thought the cricket World Cup 2007 would be as successful..
