Glory To The People

Last summer we saw certain French players attack their national anthem with such gusto it was frightening, Gavin made a post out of it I seem to recall. Well last night I saw a rendition of a national anthem that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand-up, and I didn't even know the words. What was also pleasing to see was the Uruguay fans remove their baseball caps and stand respecting the opposition's national anthem, a far cry from our own boorish fans who would have whistled and jeered all the way through it.

Talk about pride and passion, as Mr Hansen would have said, it was amazing. Unfortunately it didn't help Venezuela as they lost 4-1 to Uruguay in the Copa America Quarter Finals.

Perhaps they knew they would go no further (without a lot of luck): they played each other in the same group a few days ago
(0 - 0)

Paraguay were the surprise team despite losing top spot to Argetina (1-0) and once again Brasil left it to the last game to even qualify for the 1/4's!!

Re the anthem...must have been a good rendition then becasue it noramlly sounds very cheesy!

"Glory to the brave nation (people) that shook off the yoke,
Respecting law, virtue, and honour."

Abajo cadenas, abajo cadenas...

:-)

I used to be able to sing the whole thing.

Nothing to do with your post but noticed in your book list (on right) you included Robert Goddard's "In Pale Battalions". I LOVED that book!

If you enjoyed that then you will enjoy these: Past Caring and Painting the Darkness. Those along with In Pale Battalions were the first three he wrote and in many peoples opinion the best of his many books (although I have enjoyed all of them).

Hi Sarnia, I've got those as well, I can't decide if my favourite is Pale Battalions or Closed Circle. I love books that make you stop and think whilst your reading.

Pale Battalions is like Le Grand Meaulnes (also on the list) in that everytime I re-read it I find something new.
