Michelangelo Antonioni

Well, these deaths come along in pairs it seems. The day after Bergman, comes the news that the director of two of the most iconic films of the sixties has died. L'avventura (1960) and Blowup (1966) along with Zabriskie Point (1970) are probably his three most well known films, the latter simply because Pink Floyd wrote the soundtrack.

Antonioni was often criticised for his 'lingering' style of film directing, the way it would hold a shot just a second or two longer than was absolutely necessary, causing a sense of discomfort among cinema viewers. His detractors would accuse him of favouring style over substance, which seems a strange criticism of somebody involved in the visual arts.

Very few of us have the opportunity or the talent or the luck to leave behind us a memorial to our life and works.
