October 1968, Geoff Hurst scores six at home v Sunderland

Sorry about this Shy.

In October 1968 West Ham were at home to Sunderland in the old First Division and Geoff Hurst scored six goals in the 8-0 win, Bobby Moore scored one of the others but the scorer of the eighth seems to have been lost to history. Anyway as an illustration of how one man's victory is another man's defeat, Geoff's six goals appear in the Top Ten of one West Ham fanzines Golden Moments and they appear at Number Three on the Black Cats website A Love Supreme in the list of Roker Anti-Heroes. The two teams meet this Sunday and in the interest of Bloggers Entente Cordial I'll settle for a scrappy 1-0.

BTW - when did John Coltrane visit Roker Park?

Hi Paul!

8 - 0, eh? We got beat by the same score at Watford in October, 1982. A bloke I was working with at the time went down and when I asked him about the match on the Monday morning he actually said "We were unlucky"

Sunderland supporters are strange animals : they seem to oscillate between infantile optimism and wrist-slitting pessimism. I find it very curious that Newcastle fans have a completely different mindset.

As for Sunday's match, I'd be happy with a point.

I think it's a bit mean of A Love Supreme to have Geoff Hurst as an anti hero. His hat trick in the World Cup Final makes a him hero in my book.

I love that story Shy. Football fans can always find something in a defeat to make them feel better - unless of course you're an England fan!
