United Retain Premiership

So as last day dramas go it wasn't bad: United retain the title, Matty Taylor denies Chelsea in the last minute, Man. City players show their appreciation of the owners hire and fire attitude towards managers and when was the last time two teams scored four goals on the last day of the season and were still relegated?

It wasn't a bad season in the end, the top four stayed the same as last year: Man.Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool - Arsenal ending up only two points behind Chelsea. Derby, Birmingham and Reading were relegated - the last two managed to score four goals against Blackburn and Derby County respectively - in Reading's case it must have been a weird sensation having gone nine hours without scoring. Evertion claimed the final UEFA Cup place, Manchester City qualified for Europe via the Fair Play League, which must be the most ironic qualification in history, given their owners sense of fair play both in politics and sport.

The on going saga of Avram Grant at Chelsea was bizarre, hired by the boss, not liked by the fans, this despite a better points per game return than the the 'special one' and then ending the season with Mr Abramovitch personally conducting negotiations to bring Sergio Ramos over from Real Madrid for a paltry £55 million.

Arsenal played the best football up until Christmas but then the weird no spending policy that Arsene Wenger seems to have taken upon himself was their undoing, couldn't they have at least got a couple of players on loan before the January window shut in the faces? West Ham seem to have caught the Charlton bug from their manager and his backroom staff, play well until you have forty points and then say sod it, we're above Spuds how much better can it get?

The only real changes at the top this season were in the Cup competitions with Tottenham out thinking Chelsea and Portsmouth and Cardiff renewing one of footballs great off the field rivalries next weekend at Wembley in the F.A Cup Final.

Okay as its the end of the season and its my blog I can indulge myself my naming my team of the season - then in five minutes time I can look back and see if I've changed my mind.
Goalkeeper: Chris Kirkland - stayed fit for more than one match and helped 'Wiggie' avoid the drop.
Defence: Michael Essien at right back, Rio and Vidic in the middle, Gael Clichy at left back.
Midfield: Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Joe Cole.
Forwards: Fernando Torres and Roque Santa Cruz.
Most overrated player - David Bentley
Most underrated player - Roque Santa Cruz
Most annoying player - Emmanuel Eboue
Best Goal of the season - Dean Ashton at Old Trafford
Special 'life is more important than anything' award - Fat Frank for realising that family always out trumps football.
