What a Line-Up!

Eric Varley died last week, I couldn't post anything because I was en vacance. Anyway the name might not mean much to anybody under 45 or anybody not connected with the Labour party at any stage. Anyway the point of my post was this, when Harold Wilson won the February 1974 general election, he appointed Eric Varley as the Government's secretary of state for energy.

Varley was, at 41, the youngest member of Wilson's cabinet. Among his cabinet colleagues were: Denis Healey, Roy Jenkins, Michael Foot, Barbara Castle, Shirley Williams, Harold Lever, Tony Benn, Tony Crosland, Merlyn Rees and Jim Callaghan.

Now I don't know how much that lot would cost in a game of Fantasy Governments back in 1974 but it's a pretty impressive list in my book.
