The Spanish Invasion Continues

In the U.K we, or rather certain parts of the royal we, have been bleating forever that immigration is some sort of Labour led ethnic cleansing which is going to end with us forgetting how much we love fish and chips, football and warm beer and becoming a bunch of Polish speaking, Koran reading, teetotal, low paid toilet cleaners. Well imagine if you are a white, English speaking resident of the United States, your culture has been sucked up by the vacuum cleaner of the great multi-cultural God and emptied down the rubbish chute.

Univision a television company, whose audience are largely Spanish speaking residents of North America, has, metaphorically, broken into the homes of ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and thrown all the television ratings out of the window. They have secured the largest audiences for Wednesday and Friday night viewing figures with two of their telenovelas.

Telenovelas have become so popular in the States that in New York and Los Angeles they are regularly the most watched shows. Some telenovelas are now translated directly into English for US viewers.

Now why this is interesting is that it comes at the end of the week in which you know who was sworn in, largely thanks to the Hispanic vote, and also where once again the cost of translating all government documents into Spanish is on the agenda again. I find this fascinating because one part of recent American political history was lost forever thanks to Monica Lewinsky. Way back when Bill Clinton was in the White House there was to be a debate and vote on making English the only language on government documents.

America does not have an official language, although to date 28 out of the 50 states have declared that English is the official language in the state concerned. English has become to be assumed the official language because of its usage on official government documents, this applies at all levels of government from the White House down to the jailhouse in Hicksville, Mississippi. Now during the Clinton administration there was a worry that the Hispanic population would become too powerful and one way to stop them was to make Spanish officially the second language, I'm sure you can see the irony here with regards to Mr Obama's election victory. Anyway the vote never took place because of the possible impeachment of Clinton and now once again the subject of an official language for the U.S.A is back on the front pages.
