Still The Record Holder

Michael Martin has announced his decision to stand down as Speaker of the House and thus avoids in the ignominy of being forced out of the job by his peers (no pun intended). So it leaves Sir John Trevor as the last person to be forced out of the job, back in 1695, when he lost the gig for taking a bribe. Sir John accepted a bribe of £1,000 which would today be the equivalent of just under £110,000 using the RPI or a wallet bulging £1,619,947.81 using average earnings as your guide. The £110,000 isn't that far off most current MP's expenses claims but the bigger number would shame even the most hard faced moat owning piggy.

Talking of which Mr Hogg, great name for a trough dwelling MP, has decided that there's no future in running down streets being perused by television crews whilst wearing snorkel and flippers and has decided to step down at the next General Election. There's nothing wrong with owning a house with a moat and there's nothing wrong with cleaning that moat but there's definitely something wrong with the taxpayer picking up the tab for the industrial size Brillo pads.

By the way, further to Span's shock at the Tony Blair revelations its worth revisting this story about outgoing speaker Michael Martin. Note the date.

What a real porker he was...last year! hehehe,, martin has been at it since he "joined the club". But as you say, Sir John takes the biscuit!

P.S. Thanks for the link...if you edit the code source you should remove the #links from the end so your link goes to my post and not to the comments...

I've tried removing the links off the end but they still appear. Still, no harm done I think.
