England's Dreaming

This is Hannah. Hannah is 19, from Bournemouth and wanted to be photographed in an England shirt, now how could I refuse?

Sexism aside she was a lovely young lady, and tall as well, just under 5' 10'' in old money. And just in case anybody is wondering, no there isn't a follow-up shot of her pulling the shirt over her head and running into the crowd only to receive a yellow card or her reemergence into the daylight. For this shot I told her to imagine England had won this summer's World Cup, I think that's more of a sneer than a smile, so perhaps the semi-final is the best we can hope for!

I shall refrain from purile jokes referring to "the box" and "being fit" and ask how you did the lighting. Ordinary artificial lighting always seems to have an orange tint to it. Do you get special bulbs that compensate or is the picture digitally altered afterwards?

No software adjustment Shy. Standard two light set-up in the studio: one flash about four feet to the left of Hannah as you look highlighting her hair the other in front to the left at an angle of 45degrees. The only problem I could see in the shot was the shadow on the right of her face as you look. The light came out exactly as I had planned.

The only computer work I did was to resize from 240 to 300 dpi and increase the sharpness on her face slightly.

As a p.s I've just realised what you mean by orange tint - that's caused by over exposure, the light being turned too high or the wrong aperture being used on the camera.

Oh how can you both be so bloody serious! Especailly when Paul mentions flash!

Is that a telephoto lens on your pocket?

I would say that was not a sneer or a smile...it's definitely a smirk...and it was a smirk due to her effect on you/your reaction to her action and not to her thoughts of England winning!

IMHO (psychologist gleaning oh so much from a picture...OK, OK...I talk a load of crap)

Sneer, smile or smirk - where shall we put the Germans? (You have to be a Python fan to appreciate that).

Thank you David 'Ows' Bailey for the comment.
