You Couldn't Make It Up

I've been saying, to anybody with an interest who is within earshot, that the fringes of the modelling industry remind me of when I was a sixth form student.

Back in the day everybody who didn't want to go to Aberystwyth and become a Geography teacher wanted to be a poet. Of course nobody actually wanted to write poetry but the idea of sitting under a tree, strumming a guitar surrounded by beautiful women waiting to hear your every word had an appeal of its own. And why not? I'm sure most of us during our teenage years felt at one time or another the yearning to be a Pete Townshend or a Lord Byron or somewhere half between. And so it is with aspiring models, there are young women out there who have a photograph taken on a mobile phone, open an account with one of the online free hosting sites and forget about it, until somebody makes contact with them.

There's been a debate going on now for the last six months about whether or not those women who aren't even wannabes, more like never gonnabees, should be blacklisted or at least corralled into an area of the internet where they can be safely ignored. That way any potential would be suitors can avoid them.

In the last week or so I have sent and e-mail and received a reply from a local model which did get a lot of laughs when I posted it on one of the forums. The e-mail was in reply to an advert placed by quite an attractive model who said she was looking to build her portfolio and at the same time earn some money to pay bills. Now I prefer TF shoots whilst I am still gaining experience but having had a good shoot with some professional models in the past I thought nothing ventured nothing gained.

"Hi, I was just wondering what your rates are?"

The reply, after it has to be said, five days, went like this.

"Not sure what my rates are, I've never done any modelling."

Needless to say our correspondence is now closed.

Presumably, the correct way to do things is through a modelling agency?

I would also imagine that these girls who take the D.I.Y. approach could, unwittingly, be placing themselves at risk.

Anyway, I don't know much about this sort of thing except that I like most of the photographs. When they're done tastefully, of course!

A lot of models don't use agencies but do bring a chaperone. When I shot Hannah her Mum brought her along and the female owner of the studio was also present.
