They Just Don't Have A Clue

Guaranteed to keep the most demanding of Geeks happy into the long dark hours of the soul are discussions about broadband speeds. Well it looks as if the Labour Government must have been talking to the wrong geek when they made this election promise see the register. There's an equally spunky conversation about the same subject going on over at dizzythinks where it seems to have got a little personal.

It's difficult to see how this pledge could be fulfilled within two years as promised, of course the capacity is there and in some places the technology exists but there's an awful lot of people still on dial-up at present who have no intention of switching.

Given the passing of the digital economy bill last week I can't help thinking that all parties should be steering clear of anything to do with the provision of faster broadband connectivity beyond ensuring it is available to all schools, colleges and universities and to all hospitals, whether NHS or private. Beyond that the private sector will either have to wait or look at local partnerships.

Reminds me 7 or so yars ago when the UK was crowing (BT; and other providers) of getting 1 and 2 mega and about 20% of household had internet (of course they were charging extra and do so with every "upgrade".

At the same time 68% of households in South Korea had 16Megas, Internet fridges and other appliances connected etc.

But as you say...not something to promise, especially with a time frame!

When was the last time the government was on time and within budget with a major I.T. project?
