After Dickens…………….

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of bank bail outs, it was the age of bank bonuses, it was the age of public apologies, it was the age of private deceit, it was the season of fraudulent expense claims, it was the season of second home allowances, it was the spring of low unemployment, it was the winter of high immigration, we had riches before us, we had debt before us, we were all going directly to the IMF, we were all going directly to the country – in short it was a period like many others under a Labour Government, that some of the noisiest regulatory authorities insisted their work was just, for good or for bad, in the superlative degree of ticking boxes only.
