Is It Confusing Being A Conservative Voter?
Sometimes it seems the world is spinning in the opposite direction to normal, in the past week David Cameron has made friends with the Indians and upset the Pakistanis, Theresa May has made friends with the Europeans and upset her backbenchers, Michael Gove has once again shown that you can't offer the public something they really didn't want in the first place and little Nick Clegg has offered an alternative view on the Iraq war, alternative that is to the party with whom he currently shares power and leadership of the country.
I suppose some of this was to be expected, after all the chase is often more exciting than the catch and having got their hands on some power after donkey's years the Conservative's want to look the part, and fair play to them but somethings do seem a little strained.
David Cameron's comments on Turkey joining the EU must have had the anti-Europeans in his party chewing their copies of the Telegraph and the questions were being asked 'leader or buffoon,' I actually think he was being very clever. Whilst some ran around shouting 'don't panic, we've got plenty of room for eighty million Turks, think of all the kebab shops,' the more measured view was that he was playing the diplomatic card. Turkey have got as much chance of joining the EU as I have of shagging Carla Bruni, Germany and France will see to that, what he was actually doing was offering the olive branch of peace to a country that is a crucial buffer zone against more militant forces in the area. The old Conservative maxim of 'be a part of the EU but not in the EU' seemed to be the underlying message.
On the economic front though his lack of experience came shining through with his and little Gideon's pronouncements that the UK should see Ireland as a model of economic reform, something we too could replicate, problem is that Ireland is a basket case.
