Bye Fred

It wasn't just Liz who died today, one of the Gentlemen of English cricket also died.

Here's possibly the most celebrated anthem to a sporting legend:

Fred played from 1950 to 1978 and then briefly again until 1982. He scored nearly 22,000 runs, took nearly 3,000 wickets and played in just under 800 first class matches, he also played for England 51 times. Nobody ever had a bad word to sasy about Fred who died today aged 79.

Fukin' 'ell...hahaha

I suppose this often happens when "a biggy" dies, many other worthies are not quite forgotten but they don't get the attention they deserve.

P.S. thanks for the link!

I told my mate how a chance encounter with a cricket legend inspired that song and it seems he can easily related to it. He told me he was in W.H. Smiths about thirty years ago browsing through the LP's (those were the days) when three blokes came and started doing the same. He knew them from somewhere but could quite place them. After a short while, it dawned on him. The three men were The Bachelors!

That's brilliant Shy. I remmber being at the NEC about thirty years ago, the automatic doors opened and there in front of me were Brendan Foster and Ian St.John, me and my friend just stood and stared as they walked past.
