Alabama Shakes

Orson Welles (VO)

Every so often a band comes along whose music unites both critics and fans alike. A musical experience that satisfies our craving for nostalgia whilst sating our appetite for new experiences. This year a band emerged from Athens, Alabama who accomplished both parts of that mission. Alabama Shakes are the band whose debut album reached Number Three in the U.K and saw them nominated for three 2013 Grammy's. One of those nominations was for 'Hold On' the opening track from the album Boys and Girls which was voted best track of the year by Rolling Stone magazine.

Having watched that video I'd say they were a band whose members complement each other and each members contribution is "measured", if you know what I mean.

Having a very fine singer is also a big plus.

I agree, I think that is what makes them so good to listen to, they remind me of Booker T & The MG's who were the ultimate session band - and I don't mean that as an insult.

Agree with you both; Shy would appreciate more than most that marvellous 3 guitar sound that almost wouldn't need the vocalist or other instruments - maybe they do that on some tracks?

She really does have a great voice, one critic called it part Otis Redding part Janis Joplin.
