And what exactly is it you do?

Nothing to do with H.R.H, I just liked the photograph. Tomorrow I will have to explain, for the first time since 1983, what it is that I do for a living.

It's not quite applying for your own job but it comes pretty close, as the merger talks continue and each member of staff has to present themselves for inspection and explain what it is they do to justify such a huge wad of cash each month.

It's a challenge in a way because I know what I do, other staff members know what I do, likewise I know what they do, but there's not been the need for thirty years to set out what is pretty close to a c.v. Should I put too much or ease back on the detail, make myself seem irreplaceable or overworked? A vital cog or somebody who is hopeless at delegating to others?

I imagine I'll do my usual trick, from the annual assessments, and turn it into a J.F.K style, "ask not what I do but what you can do for me," scenario.

Funny, when I was in Spain and we all had to do survey part of which was explaining what we do: afterwards I was told I was the ONLY one who had put down the main reason for their employment, I think everyone else had gotten lost in a competition to see who could impress most with management speak buzzword bullshit bingo, yes even in Spanish!

Well I was the only one who had a list and quoted Benjamin Franklin, "If you fail to prepare be prepared to fail" which impressed.

Yes getting lost inside the envelope whilst trying to keep your eyes on the prize of some blue sky thinking misses the point doesn't it.
