It's a done deal

The t's have been crossed, along with the lower case j's and 1st June 2013 will see the unofficial unveiling of the new practice. The last sticking point was over company cars with the London office refusing at first to continue the policy of providing company cars, that was until two things were pointed out, firstly we don't have the same transport infrastructure down here and secondly by not continuing the practice our employee rights under TUPE would have been invalidated - a decision contrary to current employment law and therefore illegal.

The interviews/assessments went well, mine was the longest but as I indicated in a reply earlier in the week that was partly due to my being prepared and using a list of points as a start for further discussion. What I didn't want to do was sit down and have my mind go blank, looking a complete dork who has forgotten exactly what he does for a living. The most interesting point came when I was asked "Do you enjoy your job?" I managed to avoid answering directly by going off on a Eddie Izzard style detour and unlike Eddie I didn't really find my way home!

The good news(?) was tempered by the fact that we are about to lose one of our longest serving employees and somebody who has been a much valued cog in the bigger wheel for just over ten years. With the kids having left home and her marriage having fallen apart three years ago she's finally free to move on with her life, good luck and best wishes will follow her at the end of April when she moves along the coast to Sussex.

The biggest day to day (or week to week) change will be that we will be subject to work reviews from people with whom we have no working history or knowledge of how they work. It's perfectly understandable that this should be the case, after all who would pay the sort of money they are paying and not want to leave some sort of impression?

What did come up during the presentation by the new owners, prior to individual interviews, is that we are more than capable of punching above our own weight when it comes to fee income, they are four times our size in terms of staff numbers but we outdo them by some thirty per cent per staff member.

Good luck; let's hope you bring them up the 30% rather than vice versa.

Thanks - nothing like a challenge.

So the least they could do is continue the perk of a company car...I hate using the bus but as you'll see on my blog it is because here they are infrequent and not really priced to get more people to use them and they keep reducing the service so it gets worse.

I'm happy that you still have a job especially if it is what you enjoy and you don't find down the line you are disappointed.

That they trust the obvious experience you have especially as you have made clear in many ways they probably could learn something from how your branch operates.

Thanks Gildy. I think they had overlooked the fact that working on the South Coast doesn't mean you can catch the Northern Line to work.
