Conspiracy or cock-up?

I attended an AGM tonight at a client for whom I have been the senior auditor since 1994. The client has evolved over the years and what was once a management committee is now a fully fledged management board, I know it's only one word different but the change has been quite marked, a more professional attitude and approach - oh, it's a charity just in case anybody was wondering (yeah right!).

Anyway over the last couple of years more and more board members have wanted to have their say in the information disclosed in the accounts as a result of which there have been more and more drafts and our costs have increased. Unfortunately this coincided with new audit regulations which meant an increase across the board for all audit fees, even though we held back on fee increases for a year. What was also unfortunate was that a new intake on the board coincided with the great leap forwards in our fee and it was decided that for 2013 the audit will be put out to tender.

We have prepared and submitted our tender and I was due to hand it over at the AGM. Now when I arrived at the company premises, and negotiated my way through several corridors to where the room hosting the meeting was taking place, I was surprised to find that everybody who should be present was already there, except me. I checked my watch against the time on the clock in the room and according to me I was still five minutes early - unbeknown to me the time of the meeting had been brought forward half an hour and I was actually twenty five minutes late. The first time in twenty years of attending AGM's for various clients that I have arrived late.

I can see it now: the long corridor, the light dim, one bare bulb flickering, your footsteps echoing, you glance behind and the corridor seems to stretch into the distance...the double doors, light from under them guides you in, you wonder...THEN...
