From Iceland Online's ASK SARA

Who's the most famous Icelander?

I would probably say it's Björk. Other famous Icelandic citizens include chess master Bobby Fisher and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, both of whom were born abroad. Leifur Eiríksson, the guy who discovered America and lost it again around the year 1000, and Snorri Sturluson, a well-known writer and politician in the 13th century, are also pretty legendary. Former Icelandic president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, was the first democratically elected president in the world. Two Nobel Prize winners, Niels Finsen (medicine) in 1903 and Halldór Laxness (literature) in 1955, are both from Iceland.

Snorri Sturluson contains his excitement at being named in the Top 3 Icelanders of all time.

Icelanders obviously prefer a low key approach to fame, I make that six famous people in 2000 years, which is one fewer than the number of series of Big Brother we've had.
