Bonne Anniversaire Philippe

Philippe Noiret is 76 today. He is probably best known in this country for playing the part of the projectionist in Cinema Paradiso, a personal favourite of mine and one of only a handful of films guaranteed to have me in tears by the end.

The first time that Janis and I went to France together (back in 1989) Noiret was appearing in a play in the tiny little theatre on Mont St Michel - in fact the theatre is so small that you wouldn't know it's there if you didn't make the effort to climb the steps that separate the tourist strip from the abbey itself. Unfortunately we didn't get the chance to see him as we were just passing through but we probably wouldn't have been able to understand a word anyway!

I see very few foreign language films but did see this one many years ago, I agree. It is a special piece of cinematic culture.
