Annual General Meetings Part Two
One of the interesting things to come out of the AGM I attended on Friday night was the Chairman's report, in particular his report to the members on his role as part of the Conservative Party's National Association's Executive Committee (hope that's the right title).
It was in response to one of the club's members making the point that the club should be trying harder to attract younger members as in his words "us old ones are dying off." At present the 'younger ones' in the town go to the CIU affiliated club because of the snooker and darts, not because of their working-class leanings.
Anyhoo, the chairman said that one of the things that was concerning David Cameron is that he thinks he is losing potential older voters. The consensus among the delegates who attend these meetings was that he was concerntrating on the wrong age group and I have to say I agree with the delegates.
I personally feel that the Conservatives should be trying to persuade anybody under 50 who may have defected in 1997 and stayed away to come back. Try and convince those people who have suffered negative equity, 18% interest rates, high unemployment that the Conservatives can be trusted with the economy again. Obviously there is a need to make sure those reaching retirement age will stay loyal but it is among the under 30's where there is real political apathy.
