Happy Birthday Keith!

The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (1969)

Keith Richards is 63 on Monday - this is for me his finest four minutes of guitar work over the past forty odd years - my two favourite Stones riffs ever are actually played by Mick Taylor but that's another story. I reckon they are playing live on this television appearance, there are two obvious clues, firstly the lack of female harmonies from the album version and secondly Mick Jagger ad libs the lyrics in two places. Of course I could be wrong, in which case I'll put my anorak back in the wardrobe.

Oh and another thing, if you are a fan of rock and roll music and the first forty seconds of this classic don't make the hairs on your neck stand up you may well be deaf!

Very "atmospheric" isn't it?

Of the three Stone's lead guitarists I'd say Mick Taylor was easily the most proficient but Ron Wood fits in exactly with the ethos of the band.

It's quite funny watching old footage of the Rolling Stones and remembering how "disgusting" some people said they were. Goodness what those people would say nowadays if they watched ten minutes of any music channel!!

Mick Taylor was my favourite Shy (if that doesn't sound too homo-erotic!). Did you know that he co-wrote half of Sticky Fingers when Keef 'lost interest' but waived his right to a credit on the album - hope he gets royalties though!

I agree what you say about music, the stuff Nathalie listens to all sounds the same - hey that makes me sound like a parent doesn't it!
