I got out of bed at four this morning to watch the Third Test from Perth, I'd said on Gavin's board yesterday that I felt this morning would be the turning point in the match/series and so it proved. I didn't move between four and seven, the batting display of Hayden, Hussey and Clarke was awesome in the true sense of the word - several times I found my mouth opening, and it wasn't down to yawning because of the early start.
I took a break to go to the gym at just after seven, I waited until Hussey completed his century and then saw Monty take his wicket. When I returned just over an hour later I watched Adam Gilchrist play like a man who was hitting a tennis ball lobbed up to him by a small child, it was one of the most savage attacks on an oppositions bowlers I have seen since Viv Richards single handedly took on the England attack at Old Trafford several years ago, the difference that day was that Richards lacked support which makes his innings the better of the two. Michael Clarke also scored some of the best shots I've seen this series, not bad for somebody who probably wouldn't have been picked if Shane Watson had been available.
The star for me though was Mike Hussey, this is a batsman who hadn't played test cricket until his late twenties, wasn't considered good enough for last years Ashes and who has an average in this series beyond three figures and a career test average not too far behind. He was dropped once, lucky with an umpires decision on another occassion but generally played a chanceless innings. On Sky Mike Atherton asked viewers to e-mail suggestions of ways of getting Hussey out, the first few replies included: "Tie his laces together," "Pray," and "Try bowling at him."
As an Englishman it didn't make very good viewing but as a cricket lover it was among the best five hours or so I have spent in front of a television set.
