Enjoy it while you can

Forget all the rubbish about La Liga (Spain) being a two club league or that he couldn't do it at Stoke on a wet Monday night let's just enjoy the fact that Lionel Messi has broken Gerd Muller's forty year old record and has scored 86 goals in a calendar year (so far).

Sporting 'greats' are often either overrated or undervalued during their careers and the fact that we are living in a time when there are so many average players earning shedloads of cash should make last nights record breaking goals a source of pleasure not cynicism.

Of course Messi couldn't have done it without his team mates, something that he is quick to acknowledge, any more than Muller could have done it without being part of a Bayern Munich side that won three European Cups back to back (to back) and were also conquerors of all before them.

Who would want to do it at Stoke on an wet Monday night, anyway?

My recollection is that Muller was a completely different type of player to Messi but they've both scored loads of goals.

I wonder what Roman Abramovic thought when he heard about the new record?

Exactly to the Stoke question.

Muller was a box player - like Lineker really.

Not a lot probably!

Muller got a load of distance goals as well though...the archetypal German goal, no?

I always think of Paul Breitner when it comes to long distance goals by Germans.
