Okay here's you starter for ten. What do the following players have in common: Jackie Milburn, Bryan 'Pop' Robson, Malcolm MacDonald, John Tudor, Terry McDermott, Peter Beardsley, Mickey Quinn, Les Ferdinand, Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle, Paul Goddard, Paul Kitson, Andrew Cole, Kevin Keegan, David Ginola, Faustino Asprilla, John Barnes, Alan Shearer, Darren Huckerby, Lauren Robert, Partick Kluivert, Jermaine Jenas, Kieron Dyer, Craig Bellamy, Michael Owen, Albert Luque, Damien Duff, Obefemi Martins?
Yep, not a defender among them.
Is it any wonder Newcastle United haven't won the Championship since 1927 when they never produce or sign decent defenders or if they do, as in the case of say: Phillipe Albert and Warren Barton they sign Darren Peacock and Alain Goma to play alongside them!
You've got to admire 50,000 Geordies who turn up every fortnight in the hope that a defence built around Craig Moore and Titus Bramble is going to end 80 years of hurt!

As a Sunderland fan I have to say you're preaching to the converted, Paul. I'm also a "foreigner" as far as the people of the North East are concerned but that I means I can look at life here a little more objectively than the locals. I'll tell you something, Paul, I'm glad I ended up settling in Sunderland as opposed to Newcastle!
Hi Shy,
What makes me smile is this "we're a big club, we deseve to win something," mentality.
Even Jamie Redknapp was at it yesterday - size isn't everything.
Newcastle fans are like that : they can't see the wood for the trees.
As for the "size" argument, well, it gets me down. Most fans resort to saying "we're a big club" when they aren't actually winning anything. This is what Newcastle frequently do. We have a saying on Wearside that is often used in acronym form on badges and T-shirts etc :- "FTM". The "TM" stands for the "The Mags", i.e. all things Newcastle United.
I'll leave the "F" to your imagination.
